Black Diamond Backyard

Black Diamond Backyard is a wild and rambling 2 acre educational urban orchard and community garden located on the edge of downtown Greensboro North Carolina at the corner of Guilford Avenue and Prescott Street. The land was once a drop off and pick up point for a large coal and ice operation and pieces of coal can still be found on site. The property's history and the fossils of it's operation that still lay buried on site inspired our name, Black Diamond. With an ever growing number of garden beds for lease as well as hundreds of fruiting shrubs and trees the Backyard offers up an urban agrarian oasis that is nothing short of magic.

The Backyard is also located right off the Downtown Greenway Loop and situated on the divide between the Westerwood and Cedar Street neighborhoods, within walking distance of downtown, Deep Roots Food Cooperative, UNC Greensboro and Greensboro College. This ideal urban location makes the Backyard a highly visible and easily accessible community asset that can be shared with a diverse cross section of the city.

Our goal for Black Diamond Backyard is to protect and preserve this small section of abundant and biologically diverse urban greenspace for future generations to enjoy. By protecting and preserving this invaluable urban greenspace we will also offer the community a safe and beautiful place to garden, forage, learn, grow and thrive. This preservation effort is further extended to include horticultural, educational and culinary lectures relating to the Piedmont’s agrarian and gastronomical heritage.
